Almighty God / Happy Day

Or whilst we're dealing with new songs, have a listen to this, Almighty God, again by Tim Hughes. The version you are hearing is in Bb, which for my money is a little high... but then most songs are! Here are the words and chords in A, a bit lower.

I guess I have realised that I am using songs I have been using for ages, and one of the reasons I find myself less keen to spend time worshipping is that I need new stimulation. So I'm on the look out for new songs!

And on that journey I also found a great new Resurrection song. We do songs about the cross really well; but how many focus on the Resurrection? Tim's new website has a new song most months, and this one, for August 2006, is his own version of O Happy Day. Click here to hear it (It's the Worship Central homepage; go to the bottom of the page and click on the new song, which for August is Happy Day; I guess it may go after August, but presumably there'll be another song next month - and explore the site anyway, I rather like it). Or for just words and chords, try this link.

I do enjoy Tim's songs. Let me know what you think.

Marcus

My thoughts on the new Tim Hughes songs. Worship songs in general.

I like his music very much, however, I prefer a livelier tune. The ‘Almighty God’ song has great lyrics, for me the tune let’s it down and comes across a little dull until the chorus begins. When we sang the song on Sunday evening all I could here was the dull tones and not the fruitful tunes. Perhaps the chorus could be an introduction to the song ? The ‘Everything’ song, for me, needs rocking up. In it’s present form, in my opinion, should be sung individually or listened to in a performance rather than sung in a group.

Thinking of worship songs in general. Do church members have any input into the new song book ? Maybe songs from a different genre could be included. I find many current worship songs chosen are from a similar style. From artists such as Tim Hughes, Matt Redman, Paul Oakley, Martin Smith/Delirious, Chris Tomlin etc. Incidentally Chris Tomlin’s new album is about to be released in September. Goto www.christomlin.com for a sneak preview. Worship music can become too stereotypical. Can we reach beyond our comfort zone and praise in a different style ? After all God will be pleased with what we try, whatever it is.

Now visit http://movation.com/Releases/tbom.htm and discover an alternative style. ‘Frantik’ in the songbook anyone ?

    Guy.

Guy - I think you are right, and that God is pleased with whatever we try to use to praise Him. I'd also say - give new songs time. I remember writing off "My Jesus my Saviour" when I first heard it - and at that time I was putting together a book for St Michael's Aberystwyth; only the intervention of the other curate got it in there, and I fully acknowledge he was right, I was wrong!!!

We are looking always for new things - and Dan has some of his own songs which he's working at, and which he's asked me to help with. When they come, I hope you'll like them.

As for the Motivation songs, I think 'Frantik' may be a bit beyond us! But by all means pray that God will bring us more musicians and more people keen to worship, and one day, you never know...

So if you want a particular song in our new song book - bring it to me! No promises, as right now either Dan or I have to be able to play and lead a song, but I'd love to have new things brought to me. I'm searching all sorts of things myself too - eg, I've never really listened to Chris Tomlin, and think I need to.
